Complete transcript: “Hello my name is Pascal Cheung. I’m the client services manager at Plus Hong Kong. I’m here to answer the question, “What should companies know when relocating families”?

Relocation can be very stressful. It is very exciting, but also disruptive for the family. When families relocate, they will experience highs and lows, and these feelings can happen at different times for each family member. It can be very exciting to move to a new place, meet new people, have new experiences. But at the same time, they also need to think about how to sell their home, packing, wrapping up school, and also thinking about their new career path. The social life will also be disrupted for the family. The family will need to leave the family’s friends, school, job and so on.

We recommend for the family to be involved at the beginning of the relocation, so their needs will be addressed and accommodated. To assist relocating employees and families, companies should consider offering the following in their relocation policies:

A home finding trip for the employee and the family to get to know the new city.

Cultural orientation, for the family and the employees to better understand the customs and the practices.

Depending on the location, language training will help them ease the transition as well.

Spousal support, includes career counselling, in-depth career assessments, and also preparation for interviews.

School finding. School finding will be a tremendous help for the family to better understand which school will be a better fit for the employee’s children. It also includes preparation of the application, coordination of school visits, and also the preparation for any paperwork that is required for the application.

It is also important to have the family be in contact with a relocation counselor from a relocation management company, so to answer any questions, concerns, and also be supported throughout the relocation.

I hope this has given you a better understanding on how to support the family during relocation. Thank you for watching!”
